Better Constituency

Green MPs and Local Councils

While MPs don’t directly control local council decisions, they play a crucial role in advocating for constituents’ concerns. Matters like housing and roads are mainly under the jurisdiction of local councils. However, MPs should actively assist by raising these issues with local authorities. When constituents have exhausted local referral processes and sought help from ward councillors, Green councillors can step in where appropriate. MP’s must prioritize constituents’ needs over party loyalties and agendas, ensuring they’re not pressured to compromise on vital community matters.

Hold local parties in power to Account

The political make up in Enfield and Haringey councils has undermined the effectiveness of scrutiny committees. For scrutiny to truly serve its purpose, it must adopt the role of a ‘critical friend,’ identifying areas for improvement in decision-making processes and strategies to prevent the recurrence of mistakes. This approach is vital for ensuring accountability and enhancing the overall quality of governance.

Revenue and Spending Priority Audits

Enfield and Haringey council’s revenue collection and spending priorities have frequently fallen short of promoting the well-being of both people and the environment. Due to a low median household income of around £35,000 per year, the escalating cost of living crisis is inflicting considerable hardship. Moreover, local councils persist in overlooking the needs of the most vulnerable members of the community. A Green MP can play a crucial role in highlighting the misdirected focus of these councils and advocating for policies that truly prioritize the needs of all constituents

Green Transition With Social Justice

Crafting socially just responses to climate change, encompassing both adaptation and mitigation strategies, presents an opportunity to establish governance, systems, and infrastructure that foster a resilient and equitable society. Unfortunately, the climate change action plans of Enfield and Haringey councils have fallen short of fulfilling these critical priorities

Local Council Funding Formula

The local government finance settlement determines the annual funding allocated from central government to local authorities. However, the fairness of changes to funding formulas is compromised by Echoing economic myths perpetuated by Conservatives is critical. These myths falsely equate government finances to household finances, undermining efforts for equitable funding distribution.
